We absolutely LOVED our trip to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. It’s an incredible STEM focused children’s museum that the entire family will enjoy!

As part of our visit to Indianapolis, we couldn’t NOT go to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis! It was founded in 1925 and is the largest children’s museum in the world, yes, the world. It’s 482,950 square-feet, sits on 29 acres, and has 130,000+ objects to enjoy, and sees more than 1.2 million visitors a year.
It was amazing and there was SO much to enjoy. We’ve listed a ton of information in this blog post and we hope you grab your tickets to visit soon!
All indoor exhibits are “included” in the price of your ticket, which ranges depending on the day and time of year you attend.
Kids under two are always free though and ages 18 and up are just a few more dollars than ages 2-17. If you are an Indiana resident, membership is usually your best bet with prices ranging from $180 up to $750 per year. The first exhibit we visited was the Dinosphere and it was super cool.
I loved the exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
The Dinosphere was the first exhibit we visited and it really set the bar high for the rest of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Everywhere we looked there was another interactive spot where we could learn about dinosaurs or even touch an authentic T. rex bone.
We even came face to face with full-size dinosaur skeletons, like this one! Surrounding the dinosaur skeleton there were fun little spots that gave fun facts or had small activities. For example, there were some “smelling” stations that explained what a certain dinosaurs breath might smell like based off of his diet. Pretty cool, Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, pretty cool.
Around the corner from the above dinosaur, there is a little underground area that kiddos can go in to get a little more up close and personal with some animals. Baby O is a huge animal lover so the taxidermy animals might have been her favorite. Maybe we go to Cabela’s too often.
We didn’t take part in the Dinosphere Dinosaur Dig Site because I thought Baby O might just eat all the “sand” but it was still really cool.
Essentially, kiddos get to put on goggles and grab some diggings tools to become archaeologists. I think there were even cute vests they could wear to really get into character. I really liked this exhibit because it’s actually based off a real-life excavation from a family in Montana!
I swear there isn’t an unused spot in The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Everywhere you walk there was something fun to play with in all the exhibits. This is a magnetic puzzle of a dinosaur that you can piece together one by one. Baby O was very interested in fitting all the pieces up there but needed a bit of help finding the right spots.
Okay, so hands down these are my FAVORITE part of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. They have dinosaur costumes so the kids can dress up as a dinosaur and play in their “habitat.” I literally couldn’t handle the cuteness. They have a variety of sizes and were just absolutely adorable.

On the second floor of Dinosphere is a seemingly hidden gem of learning. It was almost set up like a classroom area with “art stations” every few feet with different activities, all revolving around dragons/dinosaurs. There was even art on display from some local students!
Since Baby O isn’t the best artist quite yet, we had to help her with most of the drawing activities but they were really cool. There were a variety of utensils to use to draw like pencils, markers, and even clay molding!
Again, this was just a super interactive area that was somehow not overrun with families and other kids. There is also a small area with all dragon and dinosaur-themed books if you need a library break.

We loved the dinosaur exhibit and you could probably just spend a few hours in there if you wanted to do every single activity. We didn’t do them all because some weren’t super age appropriate for Baby O but we would definitely recommend spending a lot of time in this area, no matter your age.
After we left Dinosphere, we stopped in the main area of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis to watch a pretty entertaining show. Our show was in conjunction with the Cirus exhibit and featured a kiddo who flew through the air like a human cannonball! The actors were hilarious and even used some kiddos from the audience to help in their act.

Shows at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
Something we didn’t check before we visited was their event calendar! They have tons of events each and every day including things like “Dinosaurs Up Close” or “Flight of the Liberty Bell 7” at various locations across the museum. My pro tip for you would be to plan your day around some of those interactive events you want to enjoy at the Children’s Museum of Indinapolis.

I love a good Indiana Jones or National Treasure movie so I knew that I would love the Treasures of the Earth exhibit. There were some things that were geared towards older kids but Baby O still really loved it and again, I liked that it was all based off real life expeditions!
Did anyone else watch The Mummy on a regular basis as a child? Just me, okay, cool. I could have spent way more time in this area just learning all about the dig sites because I find it absolutely fascinating. Those Terra Cotta statues there are actually an interative activity where you find all the pieces to put them back together.
Similar to the Dinosaur exhibit, there is a “dig site” where kids can excavate some of those fun artifacts. There are actually some artifacts in this exhibit used by Harrison Ford himself in the Indiana Jones movies!
In addition to finding treasure on land, there is a big area where you can learn about Kidd’s Shipwreck and explore it in detail. Kids can pore over old maps, excavate an underwater site, and look for clues to determine if this ship could belong to pirate, Captain William Kidd.
I mean, have you ever seen a cute scuba diver? I think not! These outfits just kill me because they are seriously so fun and in surprisingly good shape. You can really tell that the staff and the attendees cherish this museum and want to keep it in tip-top shape.
In addition to all the fun things in Treasures of the Earth that we showed above, there is a lab where you can watch real life archaeologists work on artifacts. Seti’s Tomb is also here which is a recreation of the longest, deepest, and most complete Egyptian Tomb in the Valley of the Kings.
You can follow along and solve some clues to figure out who this mummy really was. I’m obsessed with all things relating to mummies so I loved this part of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

We kind of glazed over this area because Baby O isn’t really big into trains but it was very interesting.
In the All Aboard! exhibit, you’ll be able to operate control lights, crawl inside a tunnel to look at mini trains, play with train toys, and even design a railroad on the computer. I also liked that outside this exhibit at the museum, lining the hallway were tons of mini trains in model towns. Too cute.

From there, we visited Beyond Spaceship Earth, which was actually extremely educational for us parents. Essentially, you are aboard the International Space Station where you can see real astronaut artifacts, learn space-travel history and see a glimpse into an astronauts daily life in space.

While we are very proud of our astronauts from Ohio (John Glenn <3), Indiana has a pretty impressive appreciation for their Hoosiers in space at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
Throughout this area in the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, you can learn all about them and thanks to Purdue University, you can even check out some space artifacts and images from their visits to space.
For some reason, I just find this very cool and adorable. Each NASA mission has its’ own patch and that just seems like something I want to collect.
It just seems like something so adorably youthful for such a feat like traveling to space in a rocketship. If you ever track down one of these patches, please send my way.
Yet again, another really fun exhibit! DANCE! is a multigenerational exhibit that highlights different dance styles throughout time and the world. I mean I will say that I appreciated the fact that Dancing with the Stars was playing right when you walked into this area.
They also have actual dance classes that happen in a studio here, which I think is really awesome.

If you didn’t want to attend one of the classes, you could just watch this replaying videos scattered through the exhibit.
Each one represents a different decade, gives you a history lesson on the dance from that decade and then teaches you how to do the dance! Baby O was really hoping to nail the boogie dance at the disco.

I’m a big fan of the movie That Thing You Do and for some reason, this just really reminded me of that and it really just warms my heart. Something about dance makes me feel like a kid again and simultaneously makes me excited for all the fun and joy Baby O will have in her childhood.
Oh, girl, already stealing the spotlight. You can’t see them here but there are movie theatre chairs set up in front of this stage so parents can be the audience to the routines happening on stage.
There are props on both sides so kids can get pretty interactive with their newly learned dance moves.
American POP was definitely a super interesting exhibit, especially for us nostalgic types but didn’t have a ton of activities that Baby O enjoyed. Her favorite was this oversized Brown Bear, Brown Bear book because it’s a go-to at home.

Inside this little area, you’ll find old comics, life-size Batman and Spiderman models, and even throwback board games from your childhood! You’ll even find some awesome fashion finds, like a Versace suit or trendy cowboy boots from the past.

I will admit that the Circus-Staring YOU! exhibit overwhelmed me just a little bit. There were so many fun things to play on, which is great, but there were also little ringleaders running around left and right. But, all the bright colors really make for some insta-worthy pictures. Plus, this exhibit is sponsored by Chick-Fil-A, which is my favorite.

Just when you think you’ve visited most of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, you find a whole new section that you didn’t know even existed! Take Me There: China definitely has us wanting to jump on a plane and head across the world. There are stops all around the exhibit where you can live like you’re in Beijing and really learn about their art, music, food, tea culture, and even ancient Chinese medicine.

Obviously, Baby O started with the activity that made the most noise. Next to these bells was a staff member teaching museum-goers how to play a game that looked similar to hackey-sack and soccer. There was also a “restaurant” where kids could cook, wait on tables, and even make them “pay” the bill. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis seriously thinks of everything.

Across from this big panda, was a “vet” office where there were multiple pandas that the kids could take care of, feed and play with, which I think is just adorable. If you keep going down the walkway in Beijing, you’ll stumble along a market and a home celebrating the Chinese New Year. There, you’ll find out what your characteristics are based on your “year.” For example, I’m the Year of the Horse which symbolizes enthusiasm and energy.

I was actually pretty surprised to find this area in the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The Playscape is meant for ages 5 and under and even has a super infant area for crawlers. For you nursing moms, there is a private area for nursing located here so make sure to put it on your list when you visit.
Be sure to note that this sensory focused area schedules preschool group visits on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30am – noon. If you want to avoid a crowd, I’d steer clear of those days. Your kiddo can take part in activities in Playscape like enjoying the underwater pond habitat, creating a work of art in the Art Studio, launching balls in the Reaction Contraption, and even playing musical instruments.
If your child is more adventurous than Baby O, they can even climb through the nature-inspired jungle gym aptly named “The Pond.” If your child wants to hang out in here for a while, I would suggest an extra pair of clothes because they will get wet and/or sandy.

Over in the ScienceWorks exhibit, Baby O found all her fishy friends. I swear fish might be her favorite animal. This exhibit has an event you probably don’t want to miss. Life in the Pond is an interactive activity where kids can see the live animals in the pond, witness a live animal feeding and complete a field guide to take home!
In addition to these super cute mini John Deere tractors, there is a “live” combine that kids can “drive” to harvest the corn. Probably the coolest thing about the ScienceWorks exhibit is the climbing wall they have built in! Interspersed between the climbing blocks are a whole slew of taxidermy animals so obviously Baby O enjoyed that.
Oh, look, there she is saying hello to one of her new friends. There are a few exhibits that we failed to photograph but are equally as engaging and exciting as the rest – Power of Children, Stories from Our Community, the Lilly Theater, and the Carousel Wishes & Dreams.
We had so much fun at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis but definitely have to go back soon because their brand new Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience just opened and it looks amazing.
