This easy to make unicorn poop snack mix treat is SO perfect and SO delicious! It’s made with dried fruit instead of artificial dyes. It’s perfect for a unicorn party!
What is unicorn poop?
Okay, well, great question, right? Well, there are a few different definitions of unicorn poop. Some people think it’s unicorn slime, some think it’s rainbow cookies, and some just don’t know!
But, our unicorn poop is an adorable snack mix made with flavored Chex, melted white chocolate, and unicorn sprinkles!
I came up with it to enjoy at O’s birthday because her theme was dinosaurs and unicorns. Toddlers, man. I thought it would be perfect for to share for her party AND to enjoy as an after-school treat.
What ingredients do you need to make unicorn poop?
This unicorn poop recipe only has 5 ingredients!
- Chex Cereal. There really isn’t a substitute here. You want to use Chex because it holds the chocolate sugar fruit mixture really well. Plus, Chex is gluten free so you can make this snack for those avoiding gluten.
- Powdered Sugar. Pretty self explanatory here. This is mixed with the dried fruit to make the coating for the Chex. It balances out the tartness from the fruit to make it nice and sweet.
- Freeze Dried Strawberries & Blueberries. We found ours at Trader Joe’s. You could probably also find at Whole Foods. If you look at a Kroger or Meijer, check the “natural” section because they might be hiding in there. Also, note these are FREEZE dried fruit, not just dried fruit. There is a big difference.
- White Chocolate Melting Wafers. Do you not use white chocolate chips, they are NOT the same. Wafers melt smoothly and set up firmly, unlike chips.
- Unicorn Sprinkles. These are the BEST. They are cute, delicious, and make for the perfect addition to unicorn poop.
What kitchen tools do you need to make this easy unicorn poop recipe?
There are a few steps to make this tasty little treat so you need a few tools that will make the process a little bit easier.
- Glass Mixing Bowls. Necessary while mixing all your colors together.
- Cute Treat Bowls. Since we made this unicorn poop for Olivia’s unicorn birthday party (read about it here), we had to have some festive and cute serving bowls.
- Rubber Spatulas. These are my FAVORITE spatulas because they are a single stick as opposed to two pieces where mold can get in.
- Food Processor. This is the one we have! It’s a requirement to mix the dried fruit and powdered sugar to the right consistency and stick to the Chex for your unicorn snack mix.
I made the first batch with candy melts and it was horrible. It looked super cute but it tasted terrible. Seriously, do NOT use candy melts for this unicorn poop recipe!
I put an Instagram poll out and a few followers told me to try freeze dried fruit with the powdered sugar. It worked perfectly! I would have liked the blue to be a bit darker, but it was delicious, pretty, and lovely.
If you want to recreate this unicorn poop for other festivities, here are some ideas.
Since we made this for O’s birthday (as I’ve mentioned 4 times) we made it unicorn themed. But, you could EASILY make this for other holidays, events, or just for a Thursday afternoon treat.
Dinosaurs (or dinosaurs as Olivia calls them).
- Use freeze dried kiwi or green apples to try and get a green color.
- Get these adorable green dinosaur sprinkles here. Only $6 for $4!
- This is the solid version of the treat cups that we used. They are perfect for parties.
Mermaids
- So many options here! Use blueberries for light blue, raspberries and strawberries for pink, pineapple for a light yellow, grapes or blackberries for a purple! I’m going to have to make this version.
- Sweets & Treats has an entire mermaid section that you can shop here. But, I would recommend these sprinkles and these ones for sure.
- If you want to make this recipe as a “to-go” option, grab these teal chevron bags. They are literally $1 right now for 12.
Halloween
- Use freeze dried oranges to make orange pieces of Chex. For black, I would mix the darkest berries and mix those together! The flavor doesn’t come through a ton so it wouldn’t taste weird to have blueberries, cherries, and maybe blackberries all together.
- Just like mermaids, there is a huge selection of ideas for Halloween! I’m personally a fan of the eyeball sprinkles and the candy pumpkins.
- Also, I would totally recommend serving the Halloween party mix in these black chevron cupcake liners.
A few of our other kid friendly snack mixes.
These recipes are all pretty easy and definitely kid approved. Okay, also adult approved.
- Honey Chex Snack Mix. This snack mix is PERFECT for a road trip. The peanut butter M&M’s are the best part.
- Marshmallow Dessert Goodness. Swapped the regular rice krises for cheerios and uh, best decision ever.
- Yogurt Covered Pretzels. Love these yummy, simple treats! You can adjust them for any holiday and make them extra festive.
