We love The Barn at Rocky Fork Creek! We even had our wedding dinner here. It’s a great part of the Cameron Mitchell family of restaurants.
We’ve had a lot of reasons to celebrate lately and what’s our favorite way to celebrate? With food, of course. Good, delicious, amazing food. We’ve been wanting to test out The Barn at Rocky Fork Creek for a while and we felt we finally had a reason to drop $100 on dinner.
I am sometimes skeptical of “fancy” restaurants that have a high bill. I am usually a fan of good old fashioned comfort food that costs us about $20. However, I’d eat at this restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner and then maybe come back for dessert.
We actually had our wedding dinner here! They have an awesome upstairs private dining room that is perfect for gatherings less than 50 people.
First things first, let’s start with this amazing whipped butter that came with the bread. I’m pretty sure that at one point I licked the butter off the knife. Please don’t judge me, you would do the same.
I’m pretty sure I was drooling when I asked our server what was in this magical condiment. Apparently, it’s maple whipped butter that they make in house. I almost hate that that is so easy to make because I think I’ll start having it with every meal. I’m pretty sure those little specks are cinnamon added to the mix. Delicious.
The Barn Cocktail Menu
The other pre-dinner necessity? Drinks. The Beard is a fan of Manhattan’s, so when he found out they had a Manhattan flight, he was pretty overjoyed. I suggest getting the flight for $15 so you can try all three, pick your favorite and get a full sized one with dinner.
The three varieties all featured a different bourbon, Jack Daniels, Bulliet and George Dickel (which I’ve never even heard of) and had slightly different recipes. If you are a lover of bourbon in general, then you’ll be a fan of their extensive list of libations.
Oh, and appetizers. Because, you always have to get an appetizer. You might think we are weirdos for getting onion rings here but I think you can truly judge the quality of a chef on how good their fried food taste. And, I really just love onion rings.
These were fantastic, crispy, light, slightly greasy and just the right amount of onion. I imagine that their deep fryer has insanely hot and fresh oil because these little snacks were perfectly cooked.
I love that The Barn just nails it on a traditionally casual appetizer.
This is me after I ordered fried chicken and mac and cheese. Just patiently waiting while taking selfies at a full restaurant on a Friday night. I’m clearly very excited.
Get the fried chicken at The Barn.
Anyone who knows me know that I LOVE fried chicken. It is a requirement at my wedding to have it on the menu. And it’s a good thing we decided to have our wedding dinner here because their fried chicken was fabulous.
I am still trying to figure out what was in their flavorful, comforting and dreamy seasoning. The chicken was as moist as it should be meaning the texture combination was flawless. Oh goodness, I’m drooling again.
I haven’t even mentioned the mac and cheese. Creamy, cheesy, perfectly cooked noodles and topped with a little bit of breadcrumbs. Yep, I ate it all in about 2 minutes.
If you haven’t noticed a theme, we like to eat. Hence, the extra side of their house made hot fries. If you’ve ever had the artificially colored and flavored hot fries from the gas station, this is their sophisticated older brother who lives in a downtown loft in Manhattan.
They were spicy and a little bit sweet, potato-y and crispy. My only complaint is that I would have liked a different dipping sauce than just ketchup. A nice little housemade aioli would have been lovely.
If I didn’t mention this, The Barn is first and foremost a steakhouse. According to their menu, “All of our beef is raised in the Midwest, aged and hand cut to ensure the highest quality, tenderness and flavor. Seasoned and broiled at 1200 degrees.”
I’d love to know the actual farms and standards for their beef, but I’ll settle for the vague quality standards they listed. Since The Beard is a butcher by day and a pretty good cook by night, he doesn’t always love to order a steak while we’re out since it’s typically triple the price and not always cooked to perfection. But, this steak was well worth it according to him.
Also me because I obviously demanded one or two or maybe three pieces. Marriage rules: always share delicious food. It was seared beautifully with some finishing salt added on top and nice and medium rare on the inside. For those of you who eat a steak well done, please stop. That’s no way to honor the cow.
The other lovely part of this steak is the side dish, an unsuspecting little baked potato. The wonderful staff at The Barn actually whip up the inside of your tater with the butter so it’s isn’t hard but fluffy and perfect.
I really wanted to order dessert, but since I had already consumed about 2000 calories too many, I decided against it. Don’t worry, I brought home leftovers. I never want a good meal to end so leftovers are the perfect way to achieve that.
Overall, I would absolutely recommend The Barn to anyone who is celebrating or just wants a special night out. For me, it’s a bit pricey to just go there for a random dinner. Unless, I win the lottery, then you’ll know where I’ll be.
