These are seriously the best deviled eggs in all the land. They are made with the classic combo of egg yolks, mayo, mustard and a little secret ingredient.
I love deviled eggs so much. If I see them on a menu, you better believe I’ll be ordering them. If I’m at a picnic or potluck, you better hope there are extras for everyone else. I’ve actually entered the Ohio State Fair live deviled egg contest two years in a row! I came in third place the first year, no big deal.
The best way to hard boil eggs.
The first bit of importance when it comes to making deviled eggs is making sure that you are boiling them properly. Everyone has their fool proof way to make perfect hardboiled eggs, but I’m telling you right now that this is the BEST way.
Place your eggs in a pot of cold water with 1 Tablespoon of vinegar, bring to a boil for a minute or two, then turn it off, cover the pot and let them cook for 12 minutes. Toss in an ice bath and you will have perfect hard boiled eggs.
If you were just eating these as is, it wouldn’t matter if they didn’t peel perfectly. But, nobody wants an ugly egg white when you have deviled eggs! Plus, some parts of the egg white can get a little thin and if the egg doesn’t peel well, it might not stay together enough to hold your filling.
If you aren’t making the best deviled eggs, you can just eat these puppies now. I love eating hard boiled eggs with some flaky sea salt and black pepper.
We buy the 18 pack of eggs from Costco and I typically always have at least 3-6 hard boiled eggs in the fridge for snacking. Luckily, Baby O loves them too!
The secret ingredient for the best deviled eggs.
I. LOVE. THIS. THING. My mom got us an Aerogarden for Christmas and I was very skeptical, but I’m obsessed! It’s a little pricey (about $100), but we’ve had it for 3 months and it’s already paid for itself.
If you don’t have an outdoor area for herbs or want fresh dill or basil in the dead of winter, I cannot recommend it enough.
You can grab the one we have here on Amazon.
We used the fresh dill as our secret ingredient in these deviled eggs. You could use dried dill, but fresh will get that super spring-time taste when you mix it all together.
If we had bought this much fresh dill at the store, it would easily be $4-6 but it was FREE because of our fancy little Aerogarden. I swear I’m not getting paid from them, I’m just seriously obsessed.
*note* I had just pruned all the herbs which is why it looks so small – follow us on Instagram so you can see the fullness of our garden!
How to prepare your hard boiled eggs.
Pro tip: use a SHARP knife to cut your hardboiled eggs in half. I mean, that should be the case always for cutting things, but really here because you need your eggs to be perfectly even vessels for the yolky mixture.
Also, getting on a sharp knife soapbox. You are actually WAY more likely to cut yourself with a dull knife, so seriously invest in a good knife and get it professionally sharpened when needed.
We use Shun knives and also some homemade knives from folks Joel has found on Etsy and Instagram.
Here is the chef’s knife that we use most often. Also, honestly, we sometimes use these cheese knives from Crate & Barrel when we need a quick slice!
How to top deviled eggs.
Here is a big decision for you folks when making the best deviled eggs ever.
You can go the classic route and do paprika on your delicious deviled eggs OR you can add more chopped fresh dill.
I don’t discriminate against any topping for deviled eggs, so you do whatever you like best. Or heck, do a little deviled egg sampler and try a few different toppings!

Dill Deviled Eggs
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 6-8 cups cold water
- 6 eggs
- 1/4 cup mayo
- 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
- 2 teaspoons fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dried dill
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Add apple cider vinegar to cold water in large pot. Stir, then add eggs and bring to a boil. Boil for 1-2 minutes, cover, then remove from heat and let sit covered for 11 minutes.
- Remove boiled eggs from hot water and put in an ice bath for 5 minutes to stop cooking.
- Remove from ice bath and dry the eggs. Gently crack the boiled eggs and remove the shells. Rinse the peeled eggs off just in case there are any lingering shells.
- Slice the hard boiled eggs in half lengthwise. Remove the egg yolks and add to a bowl. After you have removed all egg yolks, set sliced egg whites aside.
- Add mayo, mustard, dill, and salt and pepper to egg yolks and mix with a fork until totally combined. Continue to mash until desired consistency.
- Using a spoon, fill the egg whites with the yolk mixture until full. Top with additional dill, if desired.
- Eat immediately or refrigerate until ready to enjoy!
