We love to read in our house! The Westerville and Worthington Libraries get to see us very often, usually with a giant stack of books because Olivia says “can’t I get just one more?”
If you haven’t gotten a library card yet, I highly recommend it for many reasons and not just to check out a plethora of children’s books. Some of these are unique to Columbus, but may be the same where you live.
- The Culture Pass for free tickets to cultural organizations like The Columbus Museum of Art, the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, The Wexner Center for the Arts, Franklin Park Conservatory, and more.
- You can download FREE e-books from the comfort of your home! I have this Amazon Kindle and was shocked at how easy it was to download books from the Westerville Library. Each library has a different service, so check out your local one with info on how to download them.
- Tons of free events and activities. We signed Olivia up for a “kindergarten prep course” that was FILLED with tons of tips, activities, and resources to help transition her to back to school.
Additionally, if you haven’t signed up for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, do it now! Kids from birth – 5 years old get a FREE book every month. Here are more details on this program from Eat Play Cbus.
Now, let’s talk favorite children’s books for five year olds! I’m not a educator or children’s book expert so some of these might be a lower or higher reading level but they are fan favorites in our house.
My first recommendation is to check out these books from your local library and if you love them, try to purchase from a local bookstore like Cover to Cover Bookstore in Columbus. Then, snag ’em from Amazon or Target. I usually like to take advantage of their buy 2, get 1 free sales!
Here is the full list of books with Amazon links so you can purchase directly today! You can also check out our full list of our favorite children’s books to keep handy for birthday parties and holidays. We love to give books as gifts!

We are also big fan of Priddy Books and have a whole blog post dedicated to how great these books are for young kiddos. Finnegan has already taken a big interest in the touch and feel ones! You can also see some of our love for the Columbus Metropolitan Library here too.
