We have partnered with Gorton’s Seafood to bring you this awesome recipe. They have covered the cost of the product and paid us for our recipe and content creation.
I am SO excited to share this recipe with you all! Not that I don’t love every recipe on our blog but OMG this one is so good, so easy, and can be made for just you or the whole family. Yep, we’re talking mini air fried beer battered fish sandwiches with a homemade tartar sauce!
The first item you’ll need to whip up this tasty dish is a bag of Gorton’s Seafood beer battered fillets. You’ll be able to spot these in the frozen section of your local grocery store because of the handsome guy in the yellow coat and hat on the bag. We were big fans of Gorton’s Seafood even before this partnership, so let me tell you a few of the reasons we love them so much.
- These beer battered fillets are whole fillets, not just minced fish and it makes a serious difference with texture.
- Baby O loves them and I love that it’s a good source of protein for her, plus there are no preservatives, no filers, no artificial colors or flavors, no hydrogenated oils, and no antibiotics.
- They come in a resealable bag that ACTUALLY re-seals in your freezer!

Obviously the fish is very vital for the fish sandwich, but the sauce is also equally as important. I’m a pretty big fan of condiments so this tangy tartar sauce may have actually become a fry dipping sauce too. This recipe is incredibly simple and there are about a million variations of it on the internet but I think our version is the best.
I mean, we might cheat a little because we have an aero garden (indoor herb garden) which let’s us have fresh dill even when it’s -30 outside. You can totally swap for dried dill (no judgement) but make sure you use a little less because dried herbs are a bit more potent than fresh herbs. You could also swap sweet relish for dill relish if you’d prefer a zippier tartar sauce instead of a sweeter one.
My one big tip here is to really whisk everything together because the liquid from the relish and the lemon juice can settle at the bottom and your tartar sauce would be uneven. Nobody wants that. Our secret ingredient in this fish fillet condiment is lemon zest. I feel like it just adds a pop of freshness to the sauce and makes your mini sandwich even tastier.
Alright back to the real MVP of this recipe, the beer battered fish fillets. You had to know we would be tossing these puppies in our air fryer. If you don’t have an air fryer (WUT), you can just follow the instructions on the bag and bake in the oven. I’m sure any way would be delicious but cooking in the air fryer seriously makes these SO crispy and delicious once you add them to your soft toasted buns.
I think what I love about these mini fish sandwiches is you can seriously make them for ANY meal! They would be perfect for lunch, dinner, or even and after school snack. Just serve with some chips or fries and you’ve got yourself a complete meal. Plus, we put lettuce, tomato, and onion on there so it’s basically a salad. #Healthy.
I won’t lie, I am actually super surprised that Baby O loves fried fish. Not that she’s really picky, but I didn’t think seafood would be one of her favorite dishes. She loves these sandwiches, but with ketchup instead of tartar sauce, and also loves some of the other Gorton’s Seafood products like the classic fish sticks and the potato crunch fish fillets.

Ooh, I didn’t mention the sandwich vessel, the bun option! We used these lovely little Sara Lee rolls and toasted them in a pan with some butter. They were the perfect texture combined with the crunchy fish and lettuce/onion. Ugh, my mouth is watering just writing about these again.
Since you’re making mini fish sandwiches, you def need to use some sort of roll. I wanted to use Hawaiian sweet rolls but Joel thought they might be too sweet with the tartar sauce.

- 1 1/2 teaspoon fresh dill chopped
- 1/4 cup sweet relish
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 4 mini sandwich buns
- red onion
- leaf lettuce
- tomato
Instructions
- Preheat air fryer to 360 degrees F.
- Prepare tartar sauce by adding mayo, fresh dill, sweet relish, lemon zest, black pepper, and lemon juice into a bowl and whisk until fully combined. Some of the relish might sink to the bottom, so you'll need to make sure to whisk it up enough. Set it fridge until ready to eat.

- While fish is cooking, prepare your sandwich toppings. Slice your onions and tomato and toast buns, if desired.
- Once the fish is ready, slather on a dollop of tartar sauce then top with veggies and fish! Enjoy these addicting mini sandwiches!
