These homemade grilled small potatoes are made with lamb bacon and green onions! They are the most delicious side dish for your summer cookout.
Joel got a Rec-Tec pellet grill in April and he is obsessed. But, I’m not mad about it. He’s made pulled pork, homemade beef sticks, 3 types of bacon, and he is attempting to make an apple cobbler as I type this.
If you don’t have a pellet grill or are looking for the best grill to purchase, take a look here – we give our recommendation along with some other master grillers!
But, this blog post is all about some delicious grilled potatoes with homemade lamb bacon. We won’t go into detail on the lamb bacon today because that can be a post in itself. So let’s talk potatoes.
The best potatoes to grill.
I’m pretty partial to small potatoes also known as new potatoes. We love The Little Potato Co. brand (which we used in our date night blog post here) and those are typically our go-to potato brand. You can find them at most grocery stores in the country, we usually find them at Meijer.
You could absolutely use russet or larger potatoes, just be sure to cut them into smaller size so they work with our cooking directions.
I haven’t tried sweet potatoes this way, so I can’t speak to if those would work or not.
Also, small potatoes are also known as baby potatoes, little potatoes, really any synonym of small.
How to make grilled small potatoes.
The other reason I love using small potatoes as side dishes, no chopping involved! They are already, well, small so you don’t have to do much to prep them.
You will need to boil them for about 5 minutes just to soften ’em up a bit before tossing on your grill.
As mentioned, we used our Rec-Tec pellet grill for this batch of grilled potatoes. But, you could use your charcoal or even gas grill too. We have a Weber charcoal grill that we LOVE.
Can I just bake the small potatoes instead?
Of course! If your weather isn’t cooperating, which happens a lot in Ohio, or you just don’t feel like firing up the grill – you can absolutely toss these small potatoes in the oven.
Just cook them at 350 degrees F for about 30 minutes or until fork tender. If possible, I definitely recommend the grilling option though because the flavor is incomparable!
What about the bacon?
Why not add bacon to grill small potatoes!? It add some additional flavor and texture to the dish aka it’s just super delicious.
We had made homemade lamb bacon – one of Joel’s many recipes made in his Rec-Tec so far. Pro tip – get a Food Saver when you make bacon so you can portion out servings and you’ll have it for months!
While we used lamb bacon for our potato recipe, you could use pork bacon, beef bacon (we made this too!), or even veggie bacon! Whatever you want to use will make this grilled side dish extra tasty.
A few more potato recipes.
This is one of our other favorite potato recipes on The Beard and The Baker. It may not necessarily use small potatoes but they are still darn delicious.
