Have you ever wished you could take a step back in time and experience the simplicity and charm of a bygone era? Nestled in Delaware, Ohio, Gallant Farm, a picturesque farm is waiting to be explored. This historic Depression-era farm is located at 2150 Buttermilk Hill Road and spans a vast 19 acres of lush greenery and period architecture.
At Gallant Farm, you’ll find a farmhouse adorned with period furnishings, a barn showcasing timbers dating back to the 1890s, and a quaint granary. The farm path that circles the serene pond leads you to the demonstration crop fields in the northern section of the farm. Depending on the season, you might witness the farm manager plowing, planting corn or beans, or completing the harvest.
One unique feature you shouldn’t miss is the purple martin gourds in the meadow area, providing a home for a lively colony of these large swallows. As you move closer to the farmhouse, observe the evolution of the house garden through the seasons. Produce from this very garden would have been grown, harvested, and preserved to feed the family all year back in the 1930s and 1940s.
The farmhouse is a treasure trove of history, generously adorned with period furnishings donated by community members. Wander through the rooms, take a seat on the furniture, and savor the aroma, and maybe even a taste, of whatever’s baking in the wood stove. We got the chance to try some freshly baked biscuits when we were there and Olivia immediately said “we need to make these at home.”
The barn, a marvel of craftsmanship, houses a friendly family of Tunis sheep – an endangered American breed of fat-tailed sheep. Constructed on site using timbers from a historic 1890s Delaware County barn, it also features a hayloft where feed hay is stored. You’ll also find chickens and cows around the farm!
Next to the barn, you’ll find the machine shed housing all the tools and implements a 1930s-1940s farm would’ve required. The garden shed and the granary, which includes a classroom, office space, and restrooms, are also waiting to be explored.
Speaking of restrooms, they are immaculately clean and gorgeously presented, providing comfort and convenience for all visitors.
Gallant Farm isn’t just a place to visit; it’s a place to make memories. The mini house out back is a favorite among kids. The little ones in our family, Olivia and Finn, had an absolute blast exploring this area. There was also a sandbox filled with toys for kids to enjoy!
With its rich history and variety of activities, Gallant Farm offers more than just a day out; it’s an immersive journey into the past that will captivate your heart and stir your soul. I hope you add Gallant Farm to your summer list this year!
