These fried cheeseburger bites or wontons or whatever you want to call them are just delightful. Seriously, I couldn’t stop eating them while I was taking the pictures.
Joel had to yell “stop eating them!” as I shoved another one dipped in sauce in my mouth. Sorry not sorry.
But, first, let’s talk about what is in these little morsels of deliciousness.
Ingredients for fried cheeseburger wontons.
The ingredient list here is pretty small because let’s be honest that the best cheeseburgers are the most simple ones. I’m a standard cheese, mustard, onions, and pickles kind of gal over here. Here is everything you need to make this version of a deep fried cheeseburger.
- Wonton Wrappers. We always buy these from our local Asian market. They are like $2 for a million of them. Just make sure you thaw them before you need them or they won’t come apart.
- Frying Oil. We use corn oil or vegetable oil when we fry things. It’s mild and has a high smoking point, which is necessary for deep frying.
- Ground Beef. Any ground beef will do. We had made our own – love being married to a butcher – but you can pick up some from your local grocery store. Any blend will be fine because you’re going to drain the fat.
- Cheese. We used cheddar to keep it fairly traditional. You could definitely swap up the cheeses or do a mix of a few favorites. Pepperjack could be delicious for a spicy version!
- Onions. Adding onions seems like a requirement in these little fried burger wontons. We also talked about adding tomatoes, jalapeños, or even bacon next time!
- Spices. Welp, you need a little bit of flavor! We added salt, pepper, and granulated garlic to the ground beef. You could add in your favorite burger blend like this one if you’d like.
Tips for making fried cheeseburger bites.
If you scroll down, you’ll see our handy step by step video that shows you exactly how to make these fried cheeseburger delights or you can view it here.
- Drain your ground beef. If you don’t do this step, you’ll have a liquid mess and no-one wants that.
- Mix well. After you drain your beef, you’ll add the shredded cheese to it and mix together. The warmth from the beef will cause the cheese to melt so make sure it gets nice and combined.
- Moisten your wonton wrapper. Sorry if you hate that word, but it was necessary. You’ll need to wet the edges of your wonton wrappers so that they will stick together.
- Do not overfill. Repeat after me, do NOT overfill your wontons! Less is more, guys. If you think you overstuffed it, you probably did.
- Use a thermometer. Please invest in a candy (deep fry) thermometer or even use a meat one. You need proper frying temperature so 1) they fry correctly and 2) you don’t burn your house down.
- Set up cooling station. This is an often overlooked thing when deep frying. You need an “after” place to set your crispy and HOT cheeseburger bites. We place a paper towel or two under a baking sheet so they can drain and stay crispy.
Other ways to enjoy cheeseburgers this summer.
While these might be our number one way to enjoy a “cheeseburger” this summer, these additional recipes are some strong contenders.
- Blazin’ Queso Burger. Okay, this burger has queso and Doritos on it. Yep, it’s incredible. There is also shredded lettuce, ya know for the veggies.
- Healthy Turkey Burger. This turkey burger is so flavorful! It’s topped with a jalapeno slaw and a creamy sriracha “mayo” that’s made with greek yogurt.
- Jalapeno Pineapple Burger. This juicy burger is literally making my mouth water as I write about it. Topped with grilled pineapple and sandwiched on homemade jalapeno buns.. it is everything.
Fried Cheeseburger Bites

- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup chopped/diced onion
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
Instructions
- Add 1 pound ground beef to large bowl. Add chopped onion and mix to combine. Add salt, pepper, and granulated garlic. Mix to combine.
- Add a little oil to a pan and turn to medium-high heat. Add beef mixture to pan + oil and cook about 5-8 minutes, until browned and fully cooked.

- Scoop a little less than 1 Tablespoon into the middle of the wonton wrappers.
- Fold the wonton wrapper over itself and then crimp with a fork to seal.
- Repeat with each cheeseburger bite until they are all filled and/or the filling is gone. Set aside while you prepare your frying oil.
- Fill a large pot or dutch oven with oil and bring to 350 degrees F.
- Fry your cheeseburger bites, careful not to overcrowd, until they are brown and crispy.
- Set your fried cheeseburger bites on a cooling rack with paper towels underneath to catch any oil drippings.
- Repeat until all cheeseburger bites are fried.
- Then, serve with your favorite dipping sauce like mustard, ketchup, special sauce, etc. Enjoy!
