This Earth Month craft is so fun for kiddos of all ages! Learn how to make a cute paper plate flower garden craft to help celebrate Earth Month with your kids.
This flower garden craft is so fun and so simple! But, there are a few reasons that I love it for my four year old.
- It requires a few different skill sets. They will have to cut small pieces for the dirt, grass, and flower pieces.
- They have to glue in certain spots for the grass, dirt, flowers, and sky which takes some precision.
- You can have a great discussion about how flowers grow and what they need (water, dirt, sunshine) to thrive.
My favorite part of this easy Earth Day craft is that it should entertain your kiddo for more than five minutes. Isn’t that the best reason of all?
If you are like me and have a pretty well stocked craft area, you should have everything on hand to make your paper plate flower garden craft. You can substitute a few items if you don’t have these specific ones, I listed the swaps below!
- Paper Plate. This is your base for the craft. You can also use construction paper or even a leftover cardboard box!
- Construction Paper. You will need green and brown construction paper for the dirt, the grass, and the flower petals. You could also use white paper and color it with markers or crayons.
- Popsicle Sticks. These are for the stems of your flowers.
- Pom Poms. You will need a few different colors. We used yellow and pink for the center of the flowers and for the sun and blue for the clouds.
- Scissors. You’ll need those to cut all your pieces of construction paper. We have a few pair of these classic kids scissors.
- Glue. I personally always like wet glue vs. glue sticks because I think it works better. Yes, it can be messier especially before you kiddo learns to “dot” the glue instead of pouring the whole bottle out, but it’s still better.
- Hole Punch and String. I didn’t do this because I couldn’t find out hole punch but you can use this to hang your finished flower garden craft to be on display for Earth Week!
Now, let’s make this fun craft! You can see most of the steps by the pictures, but here are the exact details.
- Set out all your crafting ingredients. This is just as important for recipes as it is for crafts. It also let’s your kiddo be independent and move to the next step without having to ask you to grab the glue or scissors or whatever. Then, you can enjoy that hot coffee!
- Cut out pieces of grass and dirt using the green and brown construction paper. For the dirt, we just did random little pieces. For the grass, we cut them in long triangles.
- Then, glue the brown pieces down on the bottom of your paper plate. Next glue the grass overlaying the dirt with some brown poking through.
- Next, assemble your flowers. Cut out 3 rectangle pieces of green construction paper for each flower you want to make. We did two, so we cut out six. Glue the green rectangles across each other to make petals on the top of a popsicle stick. Then, in the center, glue a colorful pom pom.
- Glue your popsicle stick into the dirt and grass. Repeat with however many flowers you’d like to make for your garden!
- Glue one yellow pom pom at the top of the paper plate for the sun. Then, glue a handful of blue pom pom’s for the clouds and sky.
There you have it, an easy and adorable Earth Day craft that your kiddo will love! I mean, I also enjoyed making this and I’m 30. So it’s safe to say it’s a family crowd pleaser.
You could even add some bee or butterfly stickers to add some pollinator talking points to your Earth Day celebrations.
And here is another great craft for Earth Day that includes play-doh!
