Summer 2020 is coming in hot! We are getting excited for all the crafts, indoor adventures and fun activities to do as a family.
First up is homemade maracas! We decided to use the Danimals® Organic Drinkable Smoothies as the container for an up-cycled version of this musical instrument. Luckily, O is obsessed with these delicious smoothies so we always have them on hand.
Best place to buy Danimals® Organic Drinkable Smoothies?
Obviously, Costco. You know we LOVEEEE Costco. It has everything we need and more. Plus, when you go through Danimals® Organic Drinkable Smoothies like we do, you absolutely need to buy them in bulk.
Then, when you want to start a whole band – you have LOADS of smoothie containers for your DIY maracas. It’s really a win-win.
Why Costco?
Okay, because Costco is literally the best. The prices are incredible, including this 36-pack of Danimals® for under $12. That makes the smoothies less than $1 each. Love a good deal. Save $3.50 off of Danimals® Organic Drinkable Smoothies at your local Costco now through July 27th!
If you haven’t tried the Danimals® Organic Drinkable Smoothies, let me tell you a little bit about them. They are a staple in our house because O loves them. I love that they don’t have high fructose corn syrup, no artificial flavors, no colors from artificial sources AND are a great source of calcium and Vitamin D.
But, if you are still wary of heading into the store – you can easily order via Instacart. The pack at Costco has 36 smoothies, 18 strawberry and 18 strawberry-banana. Both are delicious!

Why use smoothie containers for DIY maracas?
The Danimals® containers are the PERFECT container for DIY maracas. They are handheld for kiddos and adults and the shape works perfectly to fill with items to make the music.
First, you need to clean out your containers and let them dry. Nobody wants leftover dried smoothie in their homemade maracas!
What do I put in the maracas?
You will need about a 1/4 cup for each smoothie container to make a maraca that makes the right amount of music. Too much filling won’t allow kiddos to really shake it and too little won’t create enough noise.
You could really fill the Danimals® containers with anything that makes noise, just head into your pantry and take a look. This is also a good activity to do with your child, so they can pick out what they want to fill them up with.
Here is what we filled out homemade DIY maracas with – we picked four different items to make different sounds.
- Coarse Sea Salt. We thought this was a fun one and made some really cool music!
- Dried Pinto Beans. Make sure your beans aren’t too big and definitely make sure they are DRIED beans.
- Popcorn Kernels. The popcorn created a really fun, kinda “rain” noise.
- White Dried Rice. Again, a really good option for something small here to use.
I do want to point out that using some of these small items can be a choking hazard so be careful what you select depending on the age of your child.
What kind of tools do I need to make DIY maracas?
Okay, so if you are making these with a toddler – it might get messy. Don’t be alarmed, at least it isn’t slime. But, these are the items we used to make these diy maracas.
- Danimals® Organic Drinkable Smoothies. Obviously, you need these as the container for the maracas!
- 1/4 Measuring Cup. Use this to measure each of the items to fill the maracas.
- 4 Small Bowls. Just as I like to use these to prep ingredients for cooking, use these to set up your fillings.
- Funnel. This won’t work for bigger fillings, but helps to fill the containers with salt or rice!
- Tape. We used tape to cover the maracas and keep the filling in there!
What to do with the homemade maracas?
Have a dance party, OBVIOUSLY! We took our party tools over to my sisters house to have a dance party with my three nieces. They love to boogie, so they loved using their maracas with their big cousin.
