What exactly is Kefir?
If you are anything like me, you might not be super familiar with the drinkable cultured milk. According to Lifeway, it’s “a tart and tangy cultured milk smoothie” that has loads of health benefits.
According to me – kefir is delicious and makes excellent smoothies. Especially this cherry berry Kefir smoothie.
How is Kefir different than yogurt?
It’s not totally yogurt, but I’d say it’s on the same spectrum as yogurt. They are both creamy and tart and made with dairy.
- Kefir typically has more fat than yogurt but also more protein and more probiotics.
- Yogurt is a bit thicker than Kefir.
- Kefir is easily drinkable, yogurt is best eaten with a spoon and also granola.
- Both come in tons of flavors, I’m partial to strawberry and vanilla myself.
What are the Kefir smoothie benefits?
Okay, there are SO many amazing benefits to this tasty beverage on it’s own and extra with the cherry berry ingredients. First up, here are some benefits of Kefir.
- Probiotics. Probiotics are live microorganisms that may provide health benefits. They are essentially good bacteria that’s helpful to your gut and digestive system.
- Protein Rich. Kefir is high in protein, roughly 10 grams per cup!
- Healthy Skin. Kefir contains Alpha Hydroxy Acid, which is a popular ingredient in skin care products. I wouldn’t recommend slathering it on your face, but definitely enjoy it in a yummy smoothie.
- Happy Mind. I love this fact. Kefir contains tryptophan (same as turkey!) which helps raise the serotonin in your brain.
Also, you can find Lifeway Kefir at Kroger, Fresh Thyme Farmers Market, Meijer. Better add it to your shopping list now!

- Blender. You need a solid blender to make your smoothie. We have this one but I also recommend this Ninja blender too.
- Correct Ratios. Ever made a smoothie that’s too thick? I sure have. You want at least double the amount of liquid to fruit so it blends properly.
- Frozen Fruit. Add frozen fruit to your smoothie to keep it cold and of creamy consistency.
