Looking for a fun and interactive museum that your whole family will love? Then you need to add Boonshoft Museum of Discovery to your list ASAP.
Located at 2600 Deweese Pkwy, Dayton, OH 45414, the Boonshoft Museum is a place where you and your little ones can immerse yourselves in a world of science and nature, learning together while creating memories to cherish for a lifetime. They are open Monday – Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday: 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
The Exhibits – Where Learning Comes to Life
This museum is nothing short of a mini-universe filled with wonders for the kids (and us adults, too). It is two floors (see the map below) that features little interactive exhibits including a literal ZOO.
All exhibits are included in your admission pricing which is awesome, even the Planetarium shows! The Discovery Zoo is located on the second floor and had cute critters like otters, bats, turkey vultures, and more.
One of our favorite areas was the “nest,” a mesmerizing treetop vantage point. From here, you can catch a glimpse of our feathered friends in their natural habitat – and talk about a fun and interactive way to learn about bird species! It’s a guaranteed kiddo (and adult) favorite.
Then, there’s the honeybee colony! Yes, an actual honeybee colony. You can watch these buzzing little creatures up close, safely behind the glass. My kiddos were absolutely fascinated, and your family is sure to feel the same way.
Each of the exhibits are highly interactive to really encourage imaginative experiences. Our little ones loved the water area and the “pizza restaurant.”
We didn’t watch any of the planetarium shows but I love that they show different shows throughout the day instead of just the same one over and over. You can view the full schedule here.
The Food – Affordable and Delightful
If your family adventures are anything like ours, the question of “Mom, can we eat?” is never far away. Well, you’ll be pleased to know that the Boonshoft Museum has us covered. The café, aka EcoEatery, is surprisingly affordable – a rarity for a popular attraction – and offers a variety of choices that are both kid-friendly and delicious.
We got a variety of options including corn dogs, soft pretzels, chicken tenders, and more. We spent $17 and had food for all of us. It wasn’t the most amazing food I’ve ever had but it was great for affordable kid-friendly museum food.
The Pricing – Fun Doesn’t Have to Break the Bank
The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery offers family fun at family-friendly prices. General admission is $14.50 for adults, $12.50 for seniors (60+), $11.50 for kids aged 3-17, and free for children 2 and under.
They also are part of two awesome reciprocal programs! We used our COSI membership and received 50% off admission. But, since they are a Zoo, you can also use your membership for 50% off as well. We ALWAYS check on reciprocal programs for museums, zoos, botanical gardens, etc. because it’s such a great perk.
