I officially have a three year old! A dinosaur and unicorn loving three year old! So wild and so fun. There are so many great adventures to look forward to in year three but before we get there – let’s recap her awesome dinosaur and unicorn birthday party.
But, first I want to tell you that I am NOT good at crafts, I can barely draw a circle, and I can’t cut a straight line with scissors. I tell you all of this because this party was GREAT and if I can make it look this cute – then you can too.
I love planning themed parties, especially fun toddler birthday parties with silly themes (see O’s first party here). It can be overwhelming so first things first – make a general list of all the things you’ll need to make your dinosaur and unicorn birthday party perfect. I’ll go into detail on each one of these things below!
- Toddler Friendly Snacks + Drinks + Desserts
- Decorations (our full list is here on Amazon)
- 3-5 Activities/Games
- Thank You Gifts
These are the extra things on our unicorn birthday party list, not required, but totally encouraged.
- Matching Outfits
- Homemade Cake
- “Memory Book”
- Pinata (watching 3 year olds hit a unicorn piΓ±ata is 100% worth it)
3 year old birthday party location is key.
This was the first year that we had kids other than O at her party! YAY for toddler friends.
For her first and second birthday, we just had her party at my parent’s house which worked fine. This year, we decided to host it at one of the parks in Columbus.
I’m so glad we did – having a 3 year old’s birthday party at a public park was amazing for multiple reasons.
- It’s very cost effective. It was only $25 to rent this beautiful shaded picnic area for 3 hours! If you’re local to Columbus, check out the rentals here. If you aren’t local to Columbus, just check out your local metro parks or suburban spots.
- There are built-in activities. The park we selected had a huge playground, nature area, soccer fields, and tons of green space.
- Minor cleanup. We obviously had to clean up our area but we didn’t have to clean our house which was a total win.
- There was tons of space! Parks have plenty of shelters that can accommodate up to 100+ people or as few as 15 people.
Dinosaur and unicorn themed party food is hilarious and delicious.
I seriously had so much fun making the dishes for this dinosaur and unicorn birthday party. Once I decided on what I wanted to serve, I used Canva to make name-tags for each of the dishes.

But, the real MVP of the dinosaur and unicorn birthday party was my beautiful five layer cake. I’m still in love with it.
Similar to not being great at crafts, I’m not the best cake decorator. But, I make O’s birthday cake every year and this year I decided to try and make it a little prettier. Luckily, my girl Valentina from The Baking Fairy is a pro at decorating cakes and gave me some pointers.
Here are some of the products I used to make this dinosaur and unicorn decorated cake picture perfect. (these are all affiliate links which allow me to plan more adorable themed toddler parties)
- Dinosaur Candles
- Unicorn Cake Topper
- OXO Bench Scraper
- Turntable Cake Decorating Stand
- Food Coloring Gel
- Wilton 5 Layer 6 Inch Cake Pans
Food is great, but a dinosaur and unicorn party isn’t complete without some great activities.
I mentioned above that this was the first party we had with other kiddos but we still had a TON of adults. I wanted to make sure we had fun things for all party attendees and I’d say I achieved that with these dinosaur and unicorn themed birthday party activities.
These three dinosaur and unicorn themed activities were a hit of all ages. If you are having a party with folks who don’t know each other, they also make a great ice-breaker!
- Dinosaur masks. These make for a great photo op.
- Coloring sheets. Google “printable dinosaur coloring sheets” and then print, done.
- “What’s your unicorn and dinosaur name?” These games were hilarious and you can download them by signing up for our email list!
Cute decorations don’t have to be expensive.
I put these homemade “dinosaur prints” right at the entrance of the party so everywhere knew where to join. But, they also make a fun “hopscotch” style activity for all ages. You just need construction paper, some scissors and some masking tape to affix to the ground.
This toddler friendly activity would actually be really fun for a rainy day inside too!
The rest of the unicorn birthday party decor was basically pink and green balloons, fun games, and pink tablecloths. This was such a fun theme with a great location so it didn’t need a ton of decorations!
Sensory bins are seriously a toddler unicorn birthday party must-have.
If you are having children ages 18 months – 4 years old at a party, I cannot stress this enough – a sensory bin is SO SMART. O will play with this thing for hours. Not kidding. To make it unicorn or dinosaur themed, all you have to do is toss some little figures in with the rice.
Here is a list of all the items you need to make a solid dinosaur sensory bin.
The best game: tricera-toss!
I saw this game on Pinterest and thought, “oh that looks fun” and I was SO right. Plus, it’s SO much easier to make than you think. You basically just draw a triceratops and then glue “horns” on top and it becomes a ring toss. It’s super fun and can be used long after your dinosaur party ends.
Here are all the items you need to make the tricera-toss. You can find my inspiration here!
- White Foam Board
- Traffic Cones + Rings
- I accidentally bought this small size but they were actually PERFECT.
- Markers
- Glue (don’t use a glue stick)
Dinosaur dance party.
Okay, so this isn’t on the official list. But, my lovely friend Amanda started having a dino dance party while we were finishing up the party. I think the kiddos could have dino-danced all day long if we had let them.
Festive thank you’s are always a success.
I love giving edible thank you gifts. The past two years I’ve bought custom themed cookies and while delicious, they were over $100. This year, I opted for the $10 unicorn lollipops that took 5 minutes to put together. I also picked up a few sheets of dinosaur/unicorn stickers for an easy little gift.
These last few tips aren’t related to dinosaurs or unicorns but are the fun birthday traditions we do every year for O’s birthday party.
- Get matching themed t-shirts. Joel’s cousin made us ours and my stepmom made O’s! I plan to keep them all and then make a blanket out of them for O when she’s older.
- A notebook with messages for O. I started this on the day she was born. All our friends and family write notes to her in the same book that I’ll give to her on her 18th birthday. I actually can’t read it because it makes me happy sob.

How perfect is this! Jackson turns 3 this year and were having a Dino party for him! My best friends daughter loves unicorns and her birthday is 3 days before Jackson’s! How fun would it be to combine parties into a Dino unicorn party!!
I love all of the details!

Hello! Thanks a lot for sharing this creative idea! I’m thinking of having this theme for my toddler tuning 3 in April and who loves both Dinos and unicorns. Can you please share the list of decorations from Amazon? I tried clicking on the link but I don’t see this list there. https://www.amazon.com/shop/thebeardandthebaker
